Just Get Started

I’ve been reading a lot lately. Well, I’ve been listening to podcasts, and YouTube videos while I work and also reading blog posts, and also reading for pure enjoyment. But the point is, I’ve come across the same idea several times in the last few days.

If you have a new project coming up, be it graphic design or otherwise, don’t wait until it’s perfect. Don’t succumb to analysis paralysis. Just get in there and get started. Seth Godin talks about it over on his blog. Chris Do and Dustin Lee talk about it in an interview over on the Futur. Heck, even Uncle Atom talks about it over on Tabletop Minions. (Side note: if you are a creative type and have not discovered the joy of painting miniatures you are missing out. More on that later. Probably.)

The point is, don’t wait. If you have an idea for something new. If you don’t like your current situation and you want to make a change don’t keep waiting until the time is right, until the idea is perfect and polished. Get started on it. It doesn’t have to launch today, it just needs to start. Baby steps.

Break out your trusty notebook (and if you don’t have one I highly suggest you start keeping one. More on that later too. Probably) and start making notes. Write it all down, good or bad. It doesn’t have to be perfect, and it probably won’t be. But taking small, messy steps today towards something new is better than looking back years later and being full of regret.
